The Long Road

From British Columbia to Casa Grande, AZ

After crossing the border at Porthill, ID it was a direct shot to Coeur d'Alene, ID.  As it turned out Spokane, WA, which is about a half an hour west of Coeur d'Alene has an Interstate Fair the middle of September.  It is small by California standards but the important thing is it had the fair food concessions.

There is a nice bike trail along Coeur d'Alene Lake and the old town section (Ft. Sherman area) is also a good place to bike.

From Idaho we headed east to Missoula, MT, which I remembered was a college town (University of Montana).  We decided to see if there was a football game on Saturday.  As it turned out not only was there a football game but they were playing Sacramento State.  We bought some tickets (from a lady who works at the university and was a graduate of El Camino High School in Sacramento).  It is truely a small world.  Unfortunately for the Sac State team there was enough room in the world for the Montana Grizzles to score 59 points vs Sac State's 14.

On a better note there is a nice bike trail along the Clark (of Lewis and Clark fame) Fork river.

From Missoula it was on to Livingston, MT which is the gateway to Yellowstone National Park.  Where Veronica had a close encounter with a herd of elk.  Thinking they were just tame criters laying around the Visitor's Center she decided to venture into the middle of the herd for a really good close up picture.  Unfortunately the bull, the very large bull, did not think this was a good idea.  After some less than gentle persuasion from the the park rangers Veronica made it safely out of the herd but at least she did get that good picture of the bull.  You may wonder where I was while all this was happening--I was standing in the back of the pickup truck taking video 75 yards away.

Welcome to Yellowstone

While in Yellowstone we saw 2 Black bears, 2 Black bear cubs, a Grizzly bear, a wolf and a lot of bison, elk, deer, antelope and 3 ground squirrels and of course Old Faithful.  Unfortunately Old Faithful was a little off and we missed it the first time by 5 minutes but we did manage to see it blow about 90 minutes later.

After leaving Yellowstone NP we continued on east to Garryowen, MT.  This is right next to the site of the battle of the Little Big Horn.  It is always interesting to visit the sites of these battles and see just how improbable some of these famous battles were fought and how the changing of just a few circumstances could have totally changed the outcomes.

From Garryowen we traveled on to Casper, WY where we had some work done on our Teton 5th wheel at the factory.

The next stop was in Rawlins, WY, home of the "Old Wyoming Penitentiary" that was used for 80 years.  The tour included the gas chamber (no one would volunteer to sit in the seat) and the gallows.  It was a pretty erie place but well worth the visit.

A couple days later we were at Bryce Canyon National Park.  It is a breath takingly beautiful place and we plan to return again next year.  While in the Bryce Canyon area we hiked at Kodachrome Basin State Park.  It is also a beautiful area and has very good hiking trails.

Our main reason for coming down through Utah was to attend the Huntsman Senior Games in St. George.  We stayed just outside Zion National Park and were met by our friends from Sacramento, Chris and Marie Buck.  While in the St. George area we hiked in Zion NP and took a back country trip in our truck that got a little primitive.

At the games we ran into a group of people that we winter with in Arizona (Harry & Marie Bryce, Pat & Simone Sarty, Jerry & Darlene Winter, Tony & Elaine, Ken & Rosemary and others I am sure I have missed).  Next year we are going back for a full two weeks so that we can take in more of the competitions.

Our final stop before returning to Casa Grande was in Las Vegas, NV.  We walked the strip, ate at a buffet, walked the strip, ate some more and finally donated about a dollar to one of the slot machines.  It has been about 15 years since we passed through Las Vegas and the changes are unbelieveable.  At one point you'd think you were in New York, at another Paris but in the end with all the neon you knew you were in Las Vegas.

From Las Vegas it was one day's drive to Casa Grande and we have been here ever since.  I would tell you every thing we have been doing here for the last five and a half months but then everyone would want to be here and we don't have enough room for everyone.  So if you want to find out what the winters are like in Arizona, you will just have to come and find out for yourselves.
